VIETNAMESE LACQUER PAINTINGS EXHIBITION IN
SEOUL – THE REPUPLIC OF KOREA

Invited and sponsored by the HansaeYes24 Foundation, Hansae Co.,Ltd (Korea) and Hansae Vietnam Co.,Ltd, Art Tunnel gallery will host an exhibition featuring fourteen Vietnamese lacquer artists at Ganainsa Art Center, Seoul, from 15 July to 20 July 2015.
Extracted from “Cay son” tree, lacquer has been a special natural material since 2500 years ago. It is often used to make housewares, worship furniture and crafts. In 1925 when the French founded the Indochina Fine Arts School in Hanoi, together with the influence of European arts, Vietnamese artists started incorporating lacquers on their artwork. Time has proven that the innovative combination of local materials, folk graphics and Vietnamese spirit, together with the layout, color and European art philosophy, have created an art material highly appreciated by specialists at home and abroad. Many Vietnamese lacquer artworks have been collected and presented at prestigious museums locally and internationally. More and more foreign artists have come to Vietnam to learn the techniques of lacquer processing.
However, due to limited communication, difficulties in transportation and storage, as well as lack of understanding and confusion between art and craft, Vietnamese
lacquer artworks still have not gained their well-deserved recognition.
Funded by the HansaeYes24 Foundation, Art Tunnel gallery will bring 42 lacquer artworks by 14 Vietnamese painters to Ganainsa Art Center, Seoul for exhibition. The center was established in 1983, and since 1991 has been exhibiting the works of big names in the art world, such as Antoni Tapies (1990), Sam Francis (1991), Jasper Johns (1991), Roy Lichtenstein (1991), Joan Miro (1991) and Wilfredo Lam (1991). This exhibition will be an opportunity to introduce Vietnamese lacquer art, inspire rising artists and promote cultural exchanges between Vietnam and Korea.
- Among 42 artworks to be exhibited, 12 of them will follow the traditional visual style by the 6 artists Ha Anh Tuan, Nguyen Duc Vietnam, Nguyen Nghia Rooster, Nguyen Tan Cuong, Nguyen United Kingdom, Germany Hung.
- 30 artworks will follow modern visual style by 8 artists Nguyen Truong Linh (Gold Award National Fine Arts Exhibition 2010), Tran Phi Truong, Nguyen Hai Nam, Khai Pham Thang Long, Hoang Huu Van Wu Yen, Dang Hien.
- 3 artists Tran Phi Truong, Do Khai, Nguyen Hai Nam and curator Tran Quoc Hung will join the opening ceremony and introduce the paintings at the exhibition.
